I love the scent of kopal and aloeswood and jinkowood partly because of the scent itself, but also the idea of burning petrified wood, wood that has simmered, fermented, holding scents for centuries sometimes. If I ever allow myself one truly extravagant purchase, it will be to buy an extraordinarily old piece of incense, and burn it, trying to commune with the minds of the ancestors, wondering what it must have been like for them, experiencing the pleasure of a campfire scent, closer to the source of when that fire meant life or death, not luxury.
