At PROMO's Words of Love fundraiser in Kansas City, a couple spoke about their adventure marriage in Canada. And another couple shared the love they experience as a lesbian couple with three adopted children in rural Kansas. Part of it was poignantly funny, part of it was poignantly touching.
The overarching point was that as a society we are rejecting a whole class of people from participating in the values we espouse.
Who can be against a family based on love? Especially with so many unwanted children in the world.
Who can simultaneously be against non-commital sexual relationships AND societal sanction (with all the real benefits that conveys) of a class of people based solely on the sexual organs they happen to use in performing those sex acts?
These are not family values, these are not pro-marriage values - these are fascists stirring the pot, turning people who could combine forces to create a more values oriented world against one another, pitting the powerful against the powerless.
And keeping their own consolidation of power and resources unchecked as a result.
Anytime people are denied equality based on arbitrary conditions set at birth, you do not have to trace the reason those exclusions exist very far. And they all tend to benefit those who are able to mobilize the masses based on fear and scarcity, thereby keeping the masses from mobilizing based on abundance and love.
We have survived thus far because we continue to expand the idea of love and inclusion more liberally, especially as their are more resources to share.
The world today is ridiculously rich, and those who horde wealth as an indicator of their success or God's favor are entrapped, not just spiritually but in the isolated lives they are forced to lead.
This is where the core of the struggle leads, and one that I believe we can move closer to accomplishing simply by sharing stories using the Web, the same way the civil rights movement, the anti-war movement, was so successful in changing the tide by forcing the United States to view nightly, on television, the contradictions between our own actions and our expressed values.
In this case, as information dissemination is more and more widely distributed, the truth will set us free. While this will not happen overnight, especially since so many people are made mad by the demagoguery of mass media, the rational mind, the libery loving mind, the loving heart and soul, will be able to differentiate the truth from fiction, simply by sifting through the wheat and the chaff.
Those who live on the chaff, their views will die from age to age, until the kernels of righteousness, the germs of truth, become more and more refined, more vigorous, the beginning of universal mindfulness, the end of suffering at hand.
