The irony over all of the Foley scandal is less how it reflects on one party or the other, but how it reflects on the primitivism and contradictions of the American mind.
We can spend mind blowing amounts of money, drunk on our power, intoxicating more global economy innocents on war and intrigue, but the thing that most captures the imagination of the American public is sex, sex, sex.
The Foley situation is rife with illegalities and compromises reflecting the complete despotism of the Republican party, but how different would the Democrats have been if the situation were reversed?
Was what Clinton did any less a scandal because it was with a willing woman of age? Or does the power differential somehow compenstate for the difference?
People with power wield it in strange and unfortunately often corrupt ways. Especially in a society that still attaches more significance to whether or not someone has stains on her dress, or lewd emails, than whether or not people have food in their bellies, or mislead the whole public about the rationale for billions and billions of dollars spent on a breeding program for terrorists.
Oh, America. I pray for your soul. From the bottom of mine.
How long will we pander to the distractions of coke versus pepsi, and understand that what is at stake is a destiny beyond our own myopia?
How long until we rise up against our internalized oppression, made manifest in the belief that we are somehow better off than the folks we deny as our neighbors? How long before we internalize the words passed down to us from our forebears, in scripture and governance, that point to a more inclusive modernity, to the benefit of us all?
When will thy divine mercy open up unto a world bent on destruction, clinging to the little man's manipulation of the path to Thy glory? What will it take to experience God as divine love, rather than petty vengeance? Played out in the pews and the halls, or caves, of power?
For this path I pray for humanity, as much attachment to idea of our own destiny that very statement contains.
I wish Bush could get his Machiavellian message out about Democrats being "softer" on terrorism, if that means being "harder" on civil rights rather than propogating a fear mongering, evidently ineffective Homeland Security apparatus. In that respect, yes, the Democrats are less hypocritical, more Christian even than the radical religious right, looking at scripture more purely.
But if the U.S. needs some scandal, another scandal, to wake itself from apathy, we may as well be substituting soft core cable porn for real awareness of the news, of the issues that affect us, beyond the predictable hypocrisy of people within the beltway, or those who wish themselves so.
This is the politics of the irrevelant, as much as I am personally enjoying the continued hypocrisy of the so called Christian-right revealed.
Where are James Dobson and Jerry Falwell now? Why are they not leading the charge? This respresents an outrage on so many different levels, to everything they profess to believe.
Hello Ben,
Very good article! Keep their feet to the fire until the blind and deaf Republican thralls finally open their eyes to the truth and understand the true extent of their strong delusion and great folly!
If Christian political leaders are going to go around attacking others for not living up to their professed values, it's a damn good idea to be truthful and actually walk the walk. Logs and motes in the eye, camels through the eye of a needle, glass houses, kettles and pots, and what goes around comes around, et al. Karma's a bitch when She finally decides enough is enough! This wouldn't have been so bad on Republicans if they hadn't been such arrogant hypocrites in order to corner the so-called values voters! Now the Two Candlesticks and Two Witnesses (Truth and Justice) are "breathing fire" and "raining hailstones!"
Christian Political Leadership, Hypocrisy, Duplicity, and Purposeful Evil
The current scandal involving Congressman Foley is merely the latest in an amazingly long list of blatant deception and duplicity by Republicans and the Christian Right in recent years. While bedeviling us all with their holier-than-thou pretenses, they consistently support and/or perform blatant greed and abominable evil. Never forget the extent of their arrogance over the last two decades and especially the last 6 years. It is beyond amazing that Christians continue to blindly support such obviously blatant scoundrels, even as they are repeatedly exposed going against the most basic of human values. The level of hypocrisy and duplicity boggles the mind. There is no longer any doubt, whatsoever, that Christianity is little more than a purposeful deception used by political and religious leaders to dupe, manipulate, and coerce entire populations into giving them wealth and power, which they always use for greed, injustice, and abominable evils.
The actions of Foley and those who covered up for him directly parallel the actions of scores of priests that have raped innocent children, preyed upon others for centuries, and had their actions hidden and abetted by the Vatican. Now, in eerie repetition of Vatican history, we have a power hungry Christian Emperor (GW) working closely with the Vatican and Judeo-Christian aristocrats to lead crusades in the so-called Holy Land. Furthermore, to leave little doubt about the reality of this assessment, the USA, as the new Holy Roman Empire, is about to legalize the torture it has perpetrated in recent years while steadily reversing many of the democratic and civil freedoms that people gained when the Vatican and royalty lost control of their European empire at the turn of the nineteenth century. Now we see them following the same old path of evil as they strive to cement the status of the USA as the latest proxy Vatican empire. Make no mistake about it, the new dark ages are looming on the horizon unless we do something proactive to prevent it.
Remember that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it!
